Hull City Council wins Award for Public Sector Partnerships - 15/03/2012
Hull City Council was recognised for its outstanding work in partnerships across the city by winning the Local Government Chronicle (LGC) award for public sector partnerships.

Hull was shortlisted as one of seven Councils who excel in public sector partnerships and went on to beat the other cities to win the award with the Minerva Project.

The project is a partnership involving Humberside Probation Trust, Humberside Police, HMP Hull and is driven by the Council.

Peter Wright, Chief Executive of Humberside Probation Trust and Chair of the Community Safety Partnership said:
"The award recognises the outstanding partnership working to deliver the innovative Minerva Project which has had such an impact on re-offending. We will continue to deliver successful projects like this to make residents feel safer."

The project has changed people's lives, helping them turn their backs on crime. It has reduced re-offending across the city from 58% to just 15% in a matter of months.

It is helping people coming out of prison turn their backs on crime by giving them all round support in the areas of accommodation, education and training, employment, mental and physical health, drugs and alcohol, finance, children and families, and attitudes and behaviour. This is only achieved through effective partnership working.

The whole offer of Minerva is a vastly different way of offering the services to reduce re-offending. Bringing together the mainstream services into one place so the ex-offender is surrounded by the services in a customer centred way, rather than having to visit or even search out each service. This is a unique and enormously successful project achieving outstanding positive outcomes for reducing re-offending.

The Local Government Chronicle awards recognise success and achievements of the very best in local government. Ministers are looking at credible alternatives to custody and the Minerva Project fits the bill. Kenneth Clarke MP, Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice is planned to visit the project to see for himself the radical difference it is making to ex-offenders lives and beyond.

Leader of the Council, Councillor Stephen Brady said:
"It is particularly significant that Hull has been recognised for its partnership working at this time, as it is vital to achieve our shared visions to transform Hull. We will continue to develop fresh ideas and innovative ways of working with our partners."

In 2010 Hull won the award for most improved Council and winning the public partnerships award this year, at a time when partnerships are so important to delivering effective services shows Hull is striving forward to deliver real long term improvements and opportunities for its communities.
