Removal of frozen food and meat from local business - 14/03/2012
Hull City Council's Environmental Health Officers have secured the destruction of a large quantity of frozen meat and fish, following a routine inspection.
Akdeniz International Food Market at 200-202 Spring Bank, Hull was inspected on 29 February 2012.
During the inspection, Officers found a considerable quantity of frozen meat and fish products with no labelling, health marking or traceability, meaning that the source of the products could not be identified and that there was no information available to show that the products had been produced or distributed in accordance with the requirements of the Food Hygiene (England) Regulations 2006.
The food was therefore seized during the inspection to remove it from the food chain and a Food Condemnation and Destruction Order was subsequently granted by Hull Magistrates Court on 9 March 2012.
The food business operator, Mr Ary Kakarsh Hassan will pay for any expenses for destroying the condemned produce.
Councillor John Hewitt, Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhood and Families, said:
"This case shows that routine inspections by Environmental Health Officers are vital, making sure legal requirements are met as well as protecting residents and other businesses within the food chain. This meat will be destroyed removing any health issues that may have been caused."
The inspection resulted in the Akdeniz International Food Market being rated zero on the new national scoring scheme that Hull City Council has recently moved to. The business will receive close attention from Environmental Health Officers to ensure that satisfactory improvements are promptly made.
The food hygiene rating scheme is a national system and is already used by more than 180 other councils. It is used to reflect the standard of food hygiene, not the quality of the food, at places to eat and where food is sold.
Businesses should now be displaying new certificates and stickers with a rating between zero to five.
