Reducing the number of cars for sale on highway - 12/03/2012
Hull City Council is targeting those who are breaking the law by regularly trying to sell and advertise cars parked on the highway/road.
Hull City Council will put notices on cars parked on the roadside or roads, warning those who regularly park cars on the road and advertise them for sale that they could be breaking the law, if they continue to offer vehicles for sale in this way.
If the vehicles are not removed, the Council will use enforcement powers against the trader which could lead to a Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN) or prosecution and a substantial fine.
Whilst the Council is aware of various 'hotspot' areas we are also continuing to monitor the rest of the city to swiftly deal with problems.
Ongoing work by Environmental Enforcement Officers and Humberside Police will continue throughout the year to deter those who seek to profit from breaking the law, as well as protecting the residents of the city. If cars are being sold illegally and are untaxed then there are powers to remove these cars.
Councillor Martin Mancey, Portfolio Holder for Environment, Transport and Emergency Planning, said:
"We have listened to residents' concerns about the increasing number of cars marked for sale which are being parked on our streets.
"These cars are taking away residents' legitimate parking spaces and are creating eyesores around the city. People regularly parking cars for sale on the public highway are committing an offence, if necessary, we will take action against those who do so."
If you believe a trader is illegally selling cars on the highway/road you can report them by calling 01482 300 300, emailing enviro.crime@hullcc.gov.uk or visiting www.hullcc.gov.uk.
Consumers thinking of buying vehicles from roadside traders need to be aware that there is no guarantee that they will fulfil their contractual statutory rights. Therefore, obtaining refunds or having faulty cars repaired by the seller may prove to be problematic.
