School showcases childrens artistic talent - 05/03/2012
Children from Highland Primary School were given the opportunity to showcase their sculptures and drawings inspired by the new Kingswood College of Arts today at a special presentation event. Almost 90 year five and six pupils attended the event to round off their spring term project, which started in January, with a tour of the new school building, currently being delivered by national construction company Morgan Sindall, part of Hull Esteem Consortium under the Building Schools for the Future programme.
Following their tour of the new building, during which they were asked to study the three dimensional aspects of the development, the children returned to the existing Kingswood College of Arts to take part in art sessions which saw them create 3D sculptures and drawings inspired by the new school.
Today's presentation celebrated the children's efforts with a special awards ceremony. Kingswood College of Arts' Head teacher, Nicole Swallow, presented rosettes to pupils Lacey Mae Brown, Charley Darley, Ryan Atkinson, Louie Turner, Liam Sanderson and Shane Pickersgill for their sculptures, while Matthew Beardshaw, Kristopher Stamp and Leon Smith received awards for their art work. In recognition of their hard work, all other pupils received a certificate as a thank you and to commemorate the way in which they approached this assignment.
The presentation was followed be an exhibition of all the pupils' work in the upstairs gallery.
Steve Parks, Morgan Sindall contracts manager, also received a special award and rosette for his help in inspiring the children and their work. He said: "I really enjoyed having the opportunity to work with the children on this project and hear their views on the new school building. It was great to see the children's work on display today and a lovely surprise to receive the special award."
Tony Hammond, director of resources at Kingswood College of Arts, said: "As potential pupils of the new Kingswood College of Arts, it was important for us to get the primary school children involved in its development and to hear their opinions and visions for its future. The presentation event today gave us a chance to celebrate the work they had created."
Sam Whittaker, general manager at Hull Esteem Consortium, said: "It is important that we work closely with future pupils in order to ensure the new schools meet their needs. It is events like today that enable us to stay focused on delivering schools tailored to the pupils who will be using them in order to guarantee that they are given the best possible education and opportunities for their future."
