Humber businesses invited to create trade links with Rotterdam - 15/02/2012
Businesses in the Humber have the opportunity to join a trade mission to Rotterdam in March to make links with our European neighbour.
The visit to help attract trade links to the benefit of the Humber economy will also see a civic party from Hull sharing its cultural heritage with Rotterdam while finding out how our region can learn from how the city has used culture as part of its wider regeneration.
The trade mission and civic party will set off on P&O ferries at 5pm on Tuesday March 27 and will arrive back in Hull on March 30.
Hull City Council representatives and Humber businesses will visit Rotterdam to explore business links including meeting with the Rotterdam Port Authority, visit to and tour of Stadshavens Port Development Area, the economic hub where the port and city meet, as well as a day kept free for business to business meetings.
The Lord Mayor and council representatives will explore the civic and cultural links between the two cities including meeting with Rotterdam's culture department taking in visits to the National Architectural Institute and Maritime Museum.
One of the businesses already signed up to the trip is The Team Humber Marine Alliance, which represents more than 140 businesses in six key sectors, including commercial shipping and renewable energy.
Mark O'Reilly, director of Team Humber Marine Alliance, said:
"This visit to Rotterdam is a great opportunity for us to make links with our European neighbours to discuss opportunities for trade links for our port complex, with one of the biggest ports in the world. Team Humber Marine Alliance has had great success in finding new business for members and opportunities for collaboration to bid for major contracts. This trip offers another opportunity to do so."
Councillor Stephen Bayes, Portfolio Holder for Economic Regeneration and Employment said: "We will be able to learn from seeing the work being undertaken to expand the ports in Rotterdam and how this work will be used to the benefit of its economy. This will also be an excellent chance for businesses from across the Humber to set up contacts and links with businesses from one of the worlds largest ports."
"For any businesses in the renewable energy sector they will also be able to be involved in talks with the Rotterdam Climate Initiative. We hope that businesses take the opportunity make some links."
Lord Mayor of Hull and Admiral of the Humber Councillor Colin Inglis said: "We will be meeting the newly elected Mayor of Rotterdam, Ahmed Aboutaleb for the first time, giving us a chance to emphasise to him the importance of our Civic and business links to his city.
"The visit will also allow us to share our rich heritage and learn from Rotterdam's international reputation in the field of art and culture and how it has used culture as part of its wider regeneration. It is also an opportunity to link future cultural programmes as well as facilitating the many business-to-business meetings we hope will happen during our stay."
Companies taking part in the trip will have an opportunity to invite guests to a Dinner that the Lord Mayor is hosting.
Any companies wishing to take part in the trip should call Phil Hall on (01482) 612167.
