Revised GCSE results show Hull continues to improve - 26/01/2012
Revised GCSE results have been released by the Department for Education today, which show that Hull is continuing to improve consistently each year.
The figures confirm that 46.3 per cent of pupils achieved five A*-C GCSEs including English and maths last year, an increase of 4.3 percentage points from 2010.
Results for five good GCSEs overall show that 82.4 per cent of pupils made the grade, which is an improvement of over 31 percentage points since 2008, and is above the national average of 79.5 per cent.
Councillor Helene O'Mullane, Hull City Council's Portfolio Holder for Children's Services, said:
"Yet again this year we have seen a fantastic improvement in GCSE results across the city, and I'd like to thank all the students, teachers, school staff and families who have worked so hard to help our young people achieve their best."
Vanessa Harvey-Samuel, Head of Localities and Learning, said: "Our aim now is to reach our eight ambitious targets for 2012, which we are well on the way to meeting. The key for us is to break that 50 per cent barrier for GCSE results. We know that it will be a challenge, but I also know that many schools achieved their highest ever results this year and are determined to build on that and continue to improve every year.
"We are continuing to work closely with schools to ensure that they have the best teachers teaching in the best learning environments that can inspire pupils to do their best.
"To build on our success over the last few years it is imperative that we come together as a city to focus our efforts on improving standards for children and young people as we strive towards our targets. This is why we have drawn up proposals for a City Learning and Skills Strategy that will involve a whole range of partners across the city with a shared goal - to give children and young people the best possible start in life and improve attainment and employability."
