Council composes bid for music education changes - 24/01/2012
Proposals to change how budding musicians in Hull receive their music services will get underway this week.

To secure the future of music education in our area, Hull City Council's music service will bid for funding to create a Hull Music Education Hub by working in partnership with other music providers, cultural organisations and schools.

Funding for the Hub would run from September 2012 to March 2015 and will ensure that all children in state schools, including academies and free schools, would have access to music education.

The council is proposing to become the lead partner for the Hull Music Education Hub, and is outlining the proposals to partners and stakeholders at an event at The Albemarle, Hull, this Thursday (26 January).

Partners and stakeholders attending the event range from primary and secondary schools, Young Musicians Friends Association, Yorkshire Young Musicians, Hull Philharmonic Orchestra the University of Hull, Hull Truck Theatre, Fruit and other local music related organisations.

"It is important that we deliver the best possible music service to children and young people in our area", said Councillor Helene O'Mullane, Portfolio Holder for Children and Young People.

"We want all to give them a better opportunity to learn to play instruments, sing and develop their musical talent.

"To achieve this we must bid for a Hull Music Hub with key music providers, which will help us to work more collaboratively and enhance and complement the music education on offer in Hull."

The event will see speakers outlining the proposals and talking about their involvement in the music service. Key speakers include:

John Readman, Corporate Director for Children and Young People, Hull City Council
Councillor Helene O'Mullane, Hull City Council Portfolio Holder for Children and Young People
Chris Maynard, Head of the Music Service
Penny Stirling, Yorkshire Young Musicians
Andrew Penny, Hull Philharmonic Orchestra
Guests will have the opportunity to respond and suggest improvements to the proposed bid. By the end of the event it is hoped that there will be a clear direction about how to move forward with the funding bid proposal for the Hub.

John Readman, Corporate Director for Children and Young People, said: "We feel confident that we will be successful with our funding bid and we aim that the new Hull Music Education Hub will commence from September this year.

"The hub will have an important role in helping to give children and young people a great opportunity to see their talents develop and become successful even at the earliest stage of musical learning."

Once the talk has concluded there will be a tour of the Albemarle with the opportunity for people to view live rehearsals with some of the area's young musicians.

Based on feedback from the event the proposal will be finalised and submitted
