Home improvements in St Andrews ward - 10/01/2012
Hull City Council has today announced a scheme to improve over 200 homes in West Hull despite the huge cuts to regeneration budgets nationally.

The scheme will see major improvement works to properties in and around the Airlie, Albemarle and Aylesford street area to improve their appearance and energy efficiency. Homes will be rendered in an insulating material to reduce the amount of heat escaping from them. Also, subject to eligibility, properties could be entitled to further works including new boilers or loft insulation.

Many of the properties in the area have become run down with a large number of homes stood empty. It is anticipated that this funding will provide a much needed boost to the area. Similar schemes have been carried out across the Humber, improving both the visual appearance of properties and reducing residents heating bills.

The council will discuss these proposals with residents and owners of properties by visiting the area on Wednesday 11 January from 10am until 3pm, and on Saturday 14 January from 10am until 1pm. Local St Andrews ward councillors Daren Hale and Nadine Fudge will attend both events. In addition, during January Warmzone and council officers will be visiting all homes in the area to explain the proposals and survey properties for eligibility.

Cllr John Black, Portfolio Holder for Strategic and Operational Housing said: "We empathise with the plight of residents in the area who have been left in limbo after the national funding was cut. The Council is determined not to allow the removal of funding by central government to halt urgently needed regeneration. This scheme is an example of the hard work and success of the Council in securing alternative funding. We now need residents and owners to commit to the scheme so we hope as many as possible will attend the events."

Councillors Daren Hale and Nadine Fudge are very pleased that this scheme will at least offer some comfort to residents, upset at the loss of the Gatewaty funding. Cllr Hale said "Whilst not our ideal solution, this scheme shows that Hull City Council remains committed to improving the housing and regenerating communities in St Andrews ward."
