Green Port Hull reaches new milestone - 13/12/2011
The Green Port Hull initiative has reached another key milestone after Hull City Council anticipates the receipt of a planning application for the wind turbine manufacturing plant at Alexandra Dock.
Now the pre-planning period has wound down, other work is being stepped up around skills and training, supply chain and property with the recent announcement of £25.7m Regional Growth Fund (RGF) bid and two rounds of enterprise zones for the area.
Hull City Council is continuing to work with partners to build a local supply chain, create a skills development programme to create a highly skilled workforce and attract further investment to the city region.
Portfolio Holder for Economic Regeneration and Employment Councillor Steven Bayes said: "This key milestone marks hard work by partners to get us to this point, and also the work to be continued to gain the maximum benefits to the region from any investment in Green Port Hull.
"With the RGF bid, Enterprise Zones and the excellent partnerships we have developed, we have every available tool in the toolkit to build a supply chain, develop the right skills in the region and attract investment to the region to help make the Humber the UK centre for renewables.
"By aligning parts of the second enterprise zone, made available after proposals to make 900 highly skilled workers at BAE redundant, and bringing together a skills and training package, we also want to offer hope for those facing uncertainty with their jobs."
As part of the work on skills, the council is working in partnership with Job Centre Plus. This has included the secondment of Debbie Rose from Job Centre Plus to the Green Port project team and skills working group
She said: "We are looking at how upskilling and specialist skills training can help to create a capable workforce to meet the challenges of the new industry creating as many opportunities for people in the region as possible. We are also looking at following this up with Apprenticeships and other training to continually feed the industry with workers to create as many opportunities as possible locally."
