Start of a new era for register office ceremonies - 14/11/2011
It was the end of an era on Saturday (12 November) when the final couple to marry at Hull's George Street Register Office tied the knot. They are the last of generations who have passed through the doors to register a birth, marriage or death with Hull City Council's registrars.
From today (Monday 14 November) all marriage ceremonies will take place in the Raleigh Room at The Guildhall on Alfred Gelder Street unless an alternative room or approved venue has been booked.
Stephen Stewart and Susan McWilliams, from Hull will be the first couple to have a ceremony in the Raleigh Room at The Guildhall on Monday 14 November at 2pm.
Councillor Hewitt, Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhood and Communities, said:
"The move to the Guildhall offers couples the chance to get married in one of Hull's most historic buildings and we are confident this will create memories that will stay with them forever."
Jillian Fill, Hull City Council's Superintendant Registrar, said:
"Moving to The Guildhall from the register office on George Street means couples will be married in a beautiful setting and historic building.
"Our attractive ceremony room will seat up to 40 family and friends, and guests will have the opportunity gather in the guildhalls historic tapestry room before the ceremony commences."
"This move is part of our ongoing plans to improve our service to customers. We are also in the process of reviewing the ceremonies we offer to make them more personal and give customers greater choice. It is our privilege to be part of a couple's special day and we hope that the changes we are introducing will help make that day extra special."
