Press Releases In Health And Social Care

Living Longer, Living Well - 21/09/2011
17 per cent of the UK's population is aged over 65 and by 2035 this figure is set to rise to 23 per cent, according to the Office of National Statistics. The population in Hull mirrors this trend, and like other cities nationwide is adapting its services to cater for an increasingly older population.

Hull City Council and partners NHS Hull, alongside organisations active in the voluntary and independent sector are hosting "Living well, Living Longer"; a consultation and information event for people in the city to contribute to how services for older people are being developed.

The event is being held on Friday 30 September in the Kingston Suite at the KC Stadium, off Anlaby Road. It runs from 10am - 3pm (registration from 9.30am) and places must be booked in advance by calling 01482 616 023 or emailing livinglonger.livingwell@hullcc.gov.uk.

The event will be a mix of discussions, workshops and guest speakers which will include information on Extra Care, dementia, Continuing Health Funding from the NHS, reablement and safeguarding for vulnerable groups.

One of the key note speakers is Barbara Hobbs from Ottringham, a successful business woman who suffered a debilitating stroke in her late 50s will describe her fight back to help, the support she received and the life she can now lead.

The families and carers of older people and older people themselves will find the event particularly useful since it will look at the proposed extra care services which will enable older people to live more enjoyable and independent lives. Other discussion items include proposals to raise the standard for Dementia Care and protective intervention services for older people who may need them.

Encouraging people to sign up for the event, Cllr Rilba Jones, whose health and equalities portfolio includes adult social care said:

"We are embarking on a landmark strategy for older people in the city which will enable older people to participate as fully as they wish in their communities and remain independent with dignity and peace of mind. Through the services the council and our partners are developing, we want to promote a positive image of aging with older people having a strong sense of engagement and influence."
