Press Releases In Planning

Find out what we've dug up now - 13/10/2010
If you ever watch programmes such as the Time Team, Meet the Ancestors and Digging up Britain or have an interest in archaeology then there's new e-newsletter you can sign up for.

Information on archaeological sites and finds in Hull and East Riding is kept at the Humber Sites and Monuments Record.

The Humber Archaeology Partnership has revamped its newsletter to be an enewsletter, although though those still wanting to receive a paper copy can still do so.

The newsletter brings together articles from a number of archaeological contractors, local attractions, and information from the Humber Sites and Monuments Record office. It is aimed at members of the public, and some articles will also be specifically for children.

The Sites and Monuments Record (SMR) is a public body, joint-funded by East Riding of Yorkshire Council and Hull City Council to house a database of all the archaeological information from the area.

It holds information on more than 17,000 archaeological sites, and this information is always being used and added to. We hold information on finds and sites dating back to prehistoric times, as well as holding information on modern buildings. It is a dynamic, ever-changing record that has been recently enhanced by new information taken from aerial photographs that have shown sites that, in some cases, date back to 2000 years ago.

The Humber SMR also acts as the archaeological advisors to the local planning authorities for both councils, as well as acting as local advisors for other national agencies. It also provides information on the archaeology of the area to professionals, academics and members of the public.

Those who wish to receive the e-newsletter can email archaeologynews@hullcc.gov.uk

Those who wish to continue to get a hard copy of the newsletter can contact Humber Archaeology Partnership, The Old School, Northumberland Avenue, Hull, HU2 0LN.
