Celebration of creative sessions pilot for older people - 23/04/2010
A pilot project that has enriched the lives of older people in care settings is being celebrated by residents, staff and artists today.

As part of the project older people have taken part in part in a range of activities including singing, percussion, creative movement, digital media, crafts, textiles and storytelling.

The event to celebrate the success of the project is being held at Buckingham Street Day Centre, one of the venues to offer creative opportunities for older people as part of the pilot.

Hull City Council's city arts unit and social care and housing team came together for the project and have had initial positive feedback about the scheme.

They are now waiting to see the evaluation of how the sessions have impacted on the physical and mental wellbeing of older people from an evaluation carried out by the University of Hull's Centre for Applied Research and Evaluation (CARE).

The pilot, which concluded last week, also ran at Isaac Robinson Court, Rossmore Nursing Home, Riverside Grange, Westdene Care Home and Woodford Care Home.

In the creative movement groups participants explored the theme of Chinese New Year, using all sorts of wonderful props which have inspired staff to carry on activity when the pilot project finishes. (Pictures attached)

Staff at the care homes and centre feel the sessions have had a positive impact on the quality of life for older people who took part.

By providing new types of artistic and creative activity by professional artists who worked closely with the groups and individuals concerned, new chances for artistic expression were developed for participants.

It is hoped that the pilot and its evaluation will pave the way for the development of future arts opportunities for older people across the city.

Clare Drury of Hull City Council's city arts unit said: "It has been wonderful to get the chance to bring artists into these settings.

"Research indicates the positive impact involvement in creative activity, such as singing, has on people's lives, and this pilot project seems to have proved just that. There has been a buzz of excitement from all involved and it has been very moving to see the responses and engagement from some of the participants."

Gary Jones, assistant head of community care services, said: "The Arts and Older People Project is already delivering favourable outcomes for older clients with dementia.

"Staff have picked up new skills which mean residents can continue to benefit in the future."

Day Services Manager of Buckingham Day Centre Barbara Wright: "The sessions at Buckingham Day Service have been a huge success, the users of the centre have commented that the Tuesday movement to music group leaves them feeling lifted and looking forward to the next session and staff have commented that the room was 'filled with laughter'. The Friday music group was equally successful with participants developing their skills week by week."
