Exciting plans for West Park announced - 11/08/2009
Gateway and Hull City Council have unveiled ambitious plans to transform historic West Park.
Local residents and visitors to the park are being invited to have their say on the proposals, which could see £7 million invested over the next 5-6 years to create a unique and popular attraction for the city.
Designed to appeal to all ages, the proposals aim to revive the park's original Victorian splendour, but with a dramatic, contemporary twist. They include:
* an impressive new entrance into the park and KC Stadium from Anlaby Road, based on the original 1890s design;
* spectacular lighting displays designed to interact with park users and create a talking point;
* exciting public artworks and sculptures;
* a new "paddling lake" - four times the size of the existing paddling pool - incorporating an island at its heart,
* restored historic features and bandstand to return a sense of grandeur to the park;
* a new, competition standard, skate park and high spec. climbing wall;
* improvements and enhancements for existing attractions including the miniature railway and bowling club;
* novel water features such as 'eco' canals and fountains;
* idyllic formal gardens and tree lined boulevards;
* innovative new play facilities designed to challenge and stimulate children;
* pedestrianisation of existing vehicular routes and a new road into the stadium to improve safety.
The transformation of West Park is an integral part of the wider regeneration work being carried out in the Newington and St. Andrew's area of west Hull by Gateway and Hull City Council, which will see £400m radically alter this part of the city over the next 10-15 years.
Laura Carr, interim chief executive at Gateway, said: "The proposed changes for West Park are very exciting and represent a major part of the work being carried out to revitalise the whole of the area. By restoring the park to its former glory we hope to provide, not only a focal point for the local community, but also create a sub-regional attraction which brings visitors in from the local area and further afield."
Gateway will kick start the work to improve the park early in 2010, with a £1.4 million project for the first phase of work to create the new Anlaby Road entrance. Further phases will then be delivered with the community involved at each stage of the design and planning process, and will be subject to further funding bids and a major submission to the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Cllr. Rick Welton, Hull City Council cabinet member for regeneration, said; "The scale, the ambition and the quality of the proposals highlight just how important West Park is to the local community and to the city as a whole. It's crucial that people take this opportunity to have their say on how these ideas develop so that when the work is completed, West Park is a very special place that everyone in the city can be proud of."
Public consultation begins this month on detailed proposals for the Anlaby Road entrance and ideas for the future of the whole park.
Dozens of exciting and informal events will be held to give local residents, park users and visitors the opportunity to get involved, including a major "Arts in the Park" event in West Park on 26th August from 2-7pm.
Organised by Hull's architecture centre, arc, this free event will be a fantastic fun day out for all the family. As well as bringing people together to help shape the plans for the park, there will be live music, creative workshops, circus performances, BMX and skateboarding demonstrations from the renowned "Team Extreme", fairground rides, food and refreshments.
The most exciting and popular part of the day is likely to be a workshop that will bring artists and residents together to produce a large-scale sculpture, a concept created by world-renowned and innovative artist, Jason Bruges, who has been appointed to play a key role in improving the aesthetic feel of the park.
