Press Releases In Transport And Streets

"Go cycle" to the new bike shed in Bike Week - 16/06/2009
Hull City Council is marking national Bike Week with the formal opening of its newest bike shelter in Queen Victoria Square on Wednesday 17 June.

Cllr Dave Woods, Hull City Council portfolio holder for Streetscene, will lead a group of cyclists from The Guildhall to Queen Victoria Square. Cllr Woods is a keen cyclist who frequently bikes from his West Hull home to work at The Guildhall. His co-cyclists will include:
  • Graham Hall - group manager highways and open spaces, Streetscene Services
  • Allan Davidson - sustainable travel officer
  • Louise Holtby - school travel adviser
  • Members of Beech Holme Tandem Club, a voluntary organisation which helps visually impaired people to enjoy cycling
  • Members of East Park's Exercise Wheel Cycle Group

Cllr Woods said: "The bike shelter in Queen Victoria Square is the latest in a number of facilities provided for cyclists in the city. In fact, Hull is among the top bike friendly cities in the country which accounts for why approximately one in ten residents bike to work, giving Hull the fifth highest cycle network use in the country."

Hull's naturally flat terrain means that a bike is the perfect way to get around the city. There are 132km (81 miles) of both on-road and off-road cycle routes. These are supported by:
  • 130 Advanced Stop lines at junctions with traffic signals
  • 29 signal controlled cycle crossing points
  • 20 mph speed limits or traffic calming measures in a third of the city
  • 50 schools have Safer Routes to School to encourage cycling or walking
  • 81 schools have school travel plans

Furthermore, the Council's Local Transport Plan has set targets to increase cycle use whilst reducing accidents involving bikes. The latest figures show that accidents involving cyclists has fallen by 47% since the plan was introduced.

Cllr Woods added: "Bikes are good for you and good for the city. Cycling is one of the best ways of getting fit and keeping fit, and since bikes produce virtually no atmospheric pollution or noise, they are good for the environment locally and increased use helps cuts traffic congestion. And, cycling is fun! It's a pastime which can be enjoyed by all ages and abilities."

Cycling's a good way of saving money too, which is always helpful in the credit crunch, because there are no fuel or tax costs and bikes are virtually maintenance free.
