Recognising the work of Hull's foster carers: the second annual FOSCARS Awards - 23/10/2008
Hull City Council's fostering team is holding its annual awards ceremony, The FOSCARS, during half term. Around 40 families will take part in the celebration, which includes an afternoon tea reception with entertainment and a visit from Hull FC's Airlie Bird.
Nominations for The FOSCARS were made by people who have been impressed by the dedication of Hull's foster carers. In total, 48 nominations have been received, which is a huge increase on last year, when the awards were held for the first time. Some carers have been recognised through two or even three nominations.
The Deputy Lord Mayor Councillor Karen Woods will be joined by Councillor Christine Randall, lead member for children and young people's services, and the management team from the council's fostering service to present the awards. This year there are five nomination categories to celebrate foster carers' achievements:
. New Carers
. Service Beyond Fostering
. Outstanding Commitment
. Young People's Nominations
. 15 Years of Service
The winners will receive prizes donated by Hull New Theatre, Hull Truck Theatre and Hull City Council's Leisure service.
Councillor Christine Randall, lead member for children and young people's services, said:
"The FOSCARS event is a great opportunity to say thank you to all of the foster carers who are looking after Hull's most vulnerable children. Hearing the stories behind the nominations, I felt both amazed and humbled by the commitment these carers show. I would like to congratulate every foster carer nominated for a FOSCAR and I hope they feel proud of all their achievements."
Hull City Council currently supports 269 fostering families who look after 360 local children and young people. The FOSCARS award ceremony is part of a range of extensive support services available to foster carers, which also includes financial allowances, out of hours support and bespoke training packages.
