Apply for a poisons licence

Poisons

We enforce and advise upon the laws covering the -

  • storage of non-medical poisons
  • sale of non medical poisons

Non-medical poisons cover both poisons on their own and any products containing that poison. This means that some common products may be legally classed as poisons depending on their ingredients, for example -

  • drain cleaners
  • kettle descalers
  • chemical toilet fluids

All businesses except pharmacies who wish to sell poisons must apply to be entered onto a list of poison sellers which we must keep by law. We have the right to refuse the application, in which case you can make an appeal about the decision.

The rules covering which poisons can be sold and to whom are complicated and need to be read carefully. For further advice contact us using the online form below. Alternatively call us on 01482 300 300 or email tradingstandardsadvicecentre@hullcc.gov.uk
