About being fostering

Fostering is what happens when a child goes to live with another family if their own family is unable to care for them.

There are different types of fostering –

  • Short breaks care is for a short period of time to offer support to children whose birth families need some short term support in order to stay together.
  • Respite care is when foster carers look after children for a few days, weekends or evenings to support the child’s regular foster carers. It also gives the child a chance to make new friends and broaden their horizons.
