Your black bin will be emptied every two weeksHow to use your black bin

Black bins are emptied every two weeks.

Find out about fortnightly household collections

Now that you can recycle more, the amount of waste left over should be much less -

  • please don’t put any of the materials in the black bin that can be recycled using your blue or brown bin
  • please put all waste inside the bin. Your bin lid should be closed flat
  • please do not put waste at the side of the bin. It will not be taken

What goes in my black bin -

  • Nappies
  • Polystyrene
  • Cling film
  • Sanitary waste
  • Dressings and plasters
  • Crisp packets
  • Sweet / chocolate / biscuit wrappers
  • Coat hangers
  • Used cotton wool and baby wipes
  • Used kitchen roll and tissues - these can be put in your home composter
  • Cotton buds
  • Hard/thick plastic e.g. washing-up bowls, broken toys, old plant pots
  • Vacuum cleaner bags and contents
  • Empty toothpaste tubes
  • Jiffy bags and bubble wrap
  • Wood - excluding twigs and branches
  • Wallpaper
  • Old pans - pans in good condition can be disposed of at Household waste and recycling centres or taken to a charity shop
  • Broken light bulbs - these can also be recycled at Household waste and recycling centres
  • Pet waste including dog faeces and cat litter
  • Washing-up sponges
  • Disposable BBQ's
  • Cigarette ends / ash
  • Plastic corks
  • Crockery - this can also be disposed of at Household waste and recycling centres
  • Small electric items - these can also be disposed of at Household waste and recycling centres
  • Photographs

The following items should not be placed in the black bin -   

  • Commercial waste
  • Garden waste including soil, stones, green waste or similar materials*
  • Building materials*
  • Liquids including paint and oil*
  • Asbestos** and other hazardous, toxic or flammable substances
  • Clinical waste and sharps
  • Fluorescent tubes*
  • Hot ashes
  • Car batteries*
  • Gas bottles* (contact 300300 for a list of gas suppliers)
  • Televisions*
  • Other Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE)*

Items marked (*) may be taken to any Household Waste Recycling Centre. Asbestos marked (**) may be taken to Wiltshire Road Household Waste Recycling Centre only. This list is not fully exhaustive.

Your black bin is emptied every two weeks. Please put your bin out by 7am at the boundary of your property and return it as soon as you can after it’s been emptied. We empty bins between 7am and 4.30pm.

If you need help moving your bin, we can give you an assisted collection. Please call 01482 300 300.

Replacement or additional bins

If you need a replacement black bin, please email info@hullcc.gov.uk or call 01482 300 300. There is a replacement charge of £30.48. 

If you have a family of six or more, you can request an extra bin.
