Music facilities

The music service is based at the Albemarle Music Centre - a £3m purpose-built facility, which opened as part of the St Stephen's development in 2007.

Built on three floors, it is home to the music service, which has more than 600 young musicians visiting each week.

The centre has two large rehearsal spaces and teaching rooms for the 16 Hull music ensembles. The centre also provides office space for the administration of the service as well as rehearsal space for the Hull Philharmonic Orchestra and the Yorkshire Young Musicians.

The main hall serves as a performance venue that is large enough to accommodate a full-size symphony orchestra. It has retractable raked seating (electronically operated) holding 192 people and a further 110 audience chairs are available when the stage alone is being used for a performance.

The centre is next door to the new Hull Truck Theatre, offering opportunities for future collaboration with the music service.

We have kitted out our library with a bespoke storage system for our extensive stock of orchestral and band music.  Similar storage is used for the instruments that we loan to pupils; and our percussion studio has large instrument storage cabinets.

Our collection of instruments from around the world - a double set of Indonesian Gamelan instruments, a set of African drums and a set of Brazilian Samba percussion instruments and our set of West Indian steel pans are also based at the centre.

We also own Soundbeam equipment for use by people with profound disabilities so they can create and experience music making.

We use the equipment to create musical activities, workshops and projects for young people and the wider community. We also offer these to schools and community groups outside the Hull area, by negotiation.
