Music ensembles
We run 16 ensembles that cover a range of styles from orchestral through to wind and brass bands to jazz and percussion groups, as well as the junior and senior choirs.
There is something for all ages and abilities. There is no charge to schools or pupils for membership of an ensemble run by the music service, as these are financially supported by Hull City Council.

Each term we put on concerts for all of our ensembles – these take place at the Albemarle Music Centre and the senior ensembles perform in the City Hall.

The Training Windband
The Training Windband is made up of woodwind, brass and percussion players from grade one to grade three ABRSM standard. The ensemble plays a wide variety of music and performs once each term.
The band rehearses on Monday evenings 6pm to 7.30pm in the Albemarle Music Centre.
The Junior Windband
The Junior Windband consists of woodwind, brass and percussion players from grade three to grade five ABRSM standard. The ensemble plays a wide variety of music and performs once each term.
The band rehearses on Monday evenings from 6pm until 7.30pm in the Albemarle Music Centre’s main hall.
The City of Hull Youth Symphonic Windband
The Symphonic Windband consists of woodwind, brass and percussion players from grade five ABRSM standard. The ensemble plays a wide variety of music and performs once each term. Entry is by audition.
The band rehearses on Monday evenings from 7.30pm until 9.30pm in the Albemarle Music Centre’s main hall.
The Training Brass Group
The Training Brass Group is a mix of brass and percussion players from pre grade one to grade two ABRSM standard. The ensemble plays a wide variety of music and performs once each term.
The band rehearses on Tuesday evenings from 6pm until 7.30pm in the Albemarle Music Centre’s rehearsal room.
The City of Hull Youth Schools’ Brass Band
The City of Hull Youth Schools’ Brass Band consists of brass and percussion players from grade three ABRSM standard. The band plays a wide variety of music and performs once each term. Entry is by audition.
The band rehearses on Tuesday evenings from 7.30pm until 9.30pm in the main hall of the Albemarle Music Centre.
The Training String Orchestra
The Training String Orchestra consists of violin, viola, cello and double bass players from grade two to grade three ABRSM standard. The ensemble plays a wide variety of music and performs once each term. Entry is by teacher recommendation.
The orchestra rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 6pm until 7.30pm in the rehearsal room at the Albemarle Music Centre.
The Junior Youth Orchestra
The Junior Youth Orchestra is made up of string, woodwind, brass and percussion players from grade three to grade five ABRSM standard. The ensemble performs a wide variety of music and performs once each term. Entry is by teacher recommendation.

The Elementary String Orchestra
The Elementary String Orchestra consists of violin, viola, cello and double bass players from pre-grade one to grade two ABRSM standard. The ensemble plays a wide variety of music and performs once each term. Entry is by teacher recommendation.
The orchestra rehearses on Thursday evenings from 6pm until 7.30pm in the main hall of the Albemarle Music Centre.
The City of Hull Youth String Orchestra
The City of Hull Youth String Orchestra consists of violin, viola, cello and double bass players from grade five ABRSM standard. The ensemble started in January 2009 and plays a wide variety of string orchestra music performing once each term.
The orchestra rehearses fortnightly on Monday evenings from 7.30pm until 9.00pm in the rehearsal room of the Albemarle Music Centre. Entry is by teacher recommendation.
The Junior Jazz Ensemble
The Junior Jazz Ensemble consists of players from grade three ABRSM standard. The ensemble plays a wide variety of music and performs once each term.
The ensemble rehearses on Thursday evenings from 6pm until 7pm in the rehearsal room of the Albemarle Music Centre.
The City of Hull Youth Jazz Orchestra
The City of Hull Youth Jazz Orchestra consists of players from grade 5 ABRSM standard. The orchestra plays a wide variety of music and performs once each term. Entry is by audition.
The ensemble rehearses on Thursday evenings from 7.30pm until 9.30pm in the main hall of the Albemarle Music Centre.
The Junior Choir
The Junior Choir consists of young singers from schools across the city.
The choir rehearses on Thursday evenings from 6.15pm until 7.15pm in the vocal studies room at the Albemarle Music Centre.
The City of Hull Youth Choir
The City of Hull Youth Choir consists of soprano, alto, tenor and bass singers. The choir sings a wide variety of music and performs once each term.
The choir rehearses on Thursday evenings from 7.30pm until 9.30pm in the rehearsal room of the Albemarle Music Centre.
The Junior Percussion Ensemble
The Junior Percussion Ensemble consists of percussionists from grade two ABRSM standard. The ensemble plays a wide variety of music and performs once each term.
The ensemble rehearses on Thursday evenings from 4.45pm until 5.45pm in the main hall of the Albemarle Music Centre.
The Senior Percussion Ensemble
The Senior Percussion Ensemble consists of percussion players from grade four ABRSM standard. The ensemble plays a wide variety of percussion ensemble music.
The ensemble rehearses on Friday evenings from 5.30pm until 6.30pm in the main hall of the Albemarle Music Centre.
The City of Hull Youth Symphony Orchestra
The Youth Orchestra consists of string, woodwind, brass and percussion players from grade five ABRSM standard. The ensemble plays a wide variety of orchestral music and performs once each term at Hull City Hall. Entry is by audition.
