Seasonal and pandemic flu

What is influenza (flu)?

Flu is a virus that can get carried in the air. Most people who get flu normally get it in the winter months. It usually means people feel very poorly and have to go to bed for several days.

A pandemic happens when a new strain of flu virus develops which no-one is protected against. The new flu virus spreads very rapidly around the world and can affect many people.

If you develop flu-like symptoms you should:

  • Tell your parent and carer how you feel
  • Stay at home and do not go to school until you are fully recovered.
  • Drink plenty of fluids.

For advice on what to do, your parent or carer could contact NHS Direct on 0845 4647.

What you can do to protect yourself and others from flu:

  • Use a tissue to cover your nose and mouth when coughing and/or sneezing. Then throw away the tissue quickly, then wash your hands.
  • Clean your hands with soap and water, especially after coughing, sneezing and using tissues.
  • Avoid touching your mouth, eyes and nose, unless you have recently cleaned your hands.
