General safety tips

Follow these tips to help you stay safe:

  • If you find yourself in an emergency, try to remain calm, get the facts and do what you’re told to do.
  • Ask an adult to tell you when you should call the emergency services (999).
  • Do you have smoke detectors in your home? If you don’t have them, speak to your parents or carer about getting some. It’s a good idea to have them especially near bedrooms and they need to be checked regularly to make sure the batteries are working.
  • Make sure that you have a first aid kit in the house. You can get these from chemists.
  • If you smell gas, tell your parent or carer. They will need to turn off at the main valve and open all windows and report the fault.
  • Stay away from things that can be dangerous like open water, electricity pylons and railway lines.
