What if I am pregnant

If you, or your partner, thinks they may be pregnant, it is important to have a pregnancy test as soon as possible. You can find out here where to get a test. School nurses also do pregnancy tests.

Even if the test is negative, and you aren’t pregnant, it is important that you make sure you are using contraception. You can find out who to talk to about contraception here .

If you are pregnant, you need to think about all your options to decide what is right for you. Sometimes talking to someone who is not a friend or in your family can really help. You can find out who to talk to here.

What are my options?

Continue with the pregnancy and keep the baby

When you’re deciding if this is the right option for you it might help you to think about these things:

  • Is this your decision? Is anyone else putting pressure on you?
  • What support will be there for you if you keep the baby?
  • Will the father of the baby support you?
  • How would you feel if you had to bring the baby up on your own?
  • What impact will the baby have on your school, college or training opportunities?
  • Will you be able to keep in touch with your friends.

If this is what you decide you need to be sure that it is your decision and you’re not choosing this option because of anyone else putting pressure on you.

If you decide to keep the baby you can get help and support in lots of areas like sorting out money, childcare, housing and education (link to these areas of text)

Ask for an abortion to end the pregnancy

When you’re deciding if this is the right option for you it might help you to think about these things:

  • Is this your decision? Is anyone else putting pressure on you?
  • What support is there for you?
  • What does the baby's father think about abortion?
  • Do you think you will have regrets later?

There are limits as to how late in the pregnancy you can have an abortion so if this is the option you choose you need to arrange it as soon as possible... If you chose this option you need to contact Conifer House as quickly as possible, call (01482) 336336.

Even though the legal age of sexual consent in England is 16, if you are under 16, you can consent for your own abortion if you can show that you can understand what is involved. However, the doctors and nurses will encourage you to involve your parents.

Continue with the pregnancy but have the baby adopted

When you’re deciding if this is the right option for you it might help you to think about these things:

  • Is this your decision? Is anyone else putting pressure on you?
  • How will you feel going through the pregnancy and birth, and then giving the baby up for adoption?
  • Do you think you will have regrets later?

Once the baby is born if you decide to keep it, there will be no pressure on you to give it up for adoption.

If your baby is adopted then the adopted parents legally become the parents of the child. You cannot change your mind and have the child back later. TPSS can support you during this process.

You can call to make an appointment on (01482) 336379 or come along to the TPSS all-day drop-in session on Tuesdays. The TPSS is based at Conifer House (link to map opens in new window), 32-36 Prospect Street in Hull.
