Being in and leaving care

I’m looked after - what are my rights?

If you are looked after you have the right to feel safe and to be treated fairly and asked what you want.

If you’re looked after you have a right to have a meeting with someone called an ICRO (Independent Conference Reviewing Officer) about how you’re getting on and how you feel.

The Rights and Participation Project (RAPP) is about making sure children are listened to and have a say in decisions that affect their lives. If you feel like no one is listening get in touch with the RAPP team, call (01482) 225855 or try the mobile on 07971429383.

Check out the website: http://www.rights4me.org/

I don’t like how I’m being treated. What can I do?

If you live in a children’s home in Hull try speaking to a manager at the children’s home first. If you are in foster care speak to your social worker.

If you’re still not happy, Debbie (the Complaints Manager) can help you make your complaint and try and sort out your problem. Ring Debbie on (01482) 616143 or text your complaint to 07789817079 or send an email to: complaints@hullcc.gov.uk

If you are from Hull but now live outside the city you can do this too.

How can I read my personal file?

When you get older you might decide you want to look at files with information about you when you leave care. But you can see your files before then if you want to.

Your social worker can sort this out and there will be people to help you understand what you read.

What happens when I leave care?

If you’re still looked after but want to find out more about what the Young People’s Support Service can do for you when you’re older, get in touch with them by ringing (01482) 331000.
