Being a young carer

“My mum died when I was six and my Dad is ill so I look after him and my little sister. Mrs Bowen next door gave me the number of a Young Carers Group. It took me a while to call them but I’m SOOOOO glad I did. This year I went away for the night with other young carers and it was so much fun. I can get help with stuff I find hard and there’s always someone to talk to.’’

Ali, 11

I take care of my mum, dad, brother or sister. How can I get help?

Do you care for an adult with an illness or disability? You probably find it hard at times and feel sad or angry. That’s ok. The situation you’re in isn’t your fault and you’re not super human – it’s ok to ask for help!

Get in touch with Hull & East Riding Young Carers Project on (01482) 803042 or email nesdc@actionforchildren.org.uk. They can give you:

  • A friendly ear to listen to you when you’re fed up
  • The chance to meet other carers like you
  • Cool stuff to do when you need a break and want some FUN
  • Trips away with other carers
  • Help for you and your family to make looking after someone easier.

If you care for your brother or sister and need some help or support find out more from the Sibling Support Service, especially for you.

Sometimes I feel like I need a break - does it mean I’m a bad person?

If you’re looking after someone and then doing a full day at school, no wonder you sometimes get tired!

If things are really bad talking to people can make things easier:

  • You could tell teachers why you sometimes are tired in class or struggle to do your homework
  • Tell your friends why you can’t invite them round
  • Ask someone for help is the right thing to do. People want to help you.

Remind yourself that the situation you’re in isn’t your fault and you’re not responsible for everything.

You may be able to get money towards paying for actvities that could improve you or your family's well-being by giving you a break from your caring role.  We may also fund towards full or part payment for items of equipment that could give you a break from caring, or make you caring role easier.
