Feeling happy or sad/depression - What to do

Happiness and sadness are two moods. It’s great to feel happy but sometimes things happen that make you feel sad. Sometimes people feel sad without knowing why.

When you're sad, you might feel like everything is pants and you’ve nothing to look forward to. But this feeling should pass.

You're not alone. Everyone feels sad every now and then. Some people have sad feelings just once in a while, and others may have sad feelings a lot.

When you're in a sad mood, it may feel like it will last forever, but usually these feelings don't last very long - a few hours or maybe a day. Just remember you will feel happy again.

You might feel like being alone for a little while. Talking about what has made you sad might help the sad feeling go away.

Some children and adults feel a deeper kind of sadness that lasts a lot longer. This is called depression.

Getting help

It's very important for children and adults who feel really sad or depressed to get help.

Sometimes this help can be by talking to someone who knows all about depression.

Sometimes medicine can help people feel better.

If you feel really sad a lot of the time it is important to talk to an adult you trust about it.

You can speak to counselors who will understand how you are feeling by calling ChildLine for free on 0800 1111.
