“I thought to eat healthily you had to stop eating all the stuff you like! But unhealthy food is only really bad for you if you eat too much of it. So I tried eating a small amount of stuff I like as a treat and filling up with food that is good for me like brown bread and fruit and vegetables. Simple!”

Jade, 10

Why is it important to eat healthily?

Your body needs to be fed a lot of different things to give it energy to help it fight illnesses and help it grow.

How can we eat more healthily?

Try to eat at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day. They have lots of vitamins in them that we cannot get from anything else. They also help protect your body from diseases like cancer and heart disease.

Watch how many sugary foods you eat – examples of foods high in sugar are sweets, biscs, cakes and some soft/fizzy drinks

Foods like dried fruits, wholemeal bread, nuts and green leafy vegetables have iron that helps make blood strong and healthy.

Eating breakfast gives your body the kickstart it needs in the morning. Try wholegrain cereals (look at the packets) and fresh juice as a healthy example.

If you like eating bread, pasta and rice try wholemeal/wholewheat versions of bread pasta and rice

Keep a food diary and try and find different ways of eating them like fruit kebabs or try things you’ve never tried before.

What have you eaten today? Do you think it was good for you?
