Finding childcare top tips:
You’ve got a new baby and you need to find childcare- where do you start? What should you be looking for and what makes one service different to another?
Don’t leave it until the last minute. Many providers have a waiting list
Do think about your child’s age and personality, especially if you have a small baby or child under two
Do shop around. Visit more than one provider, so you can compare
Do check references! This is really important – talk to other parents
Make sure you have a written contract with your provider.
When you find a childcare provider, it’s important you go and meet them to see if they would be right for your child. Ask lots of questions and double check what they say with other parents.
I’m going to see a childcare provider. What should I look out for?
Take this list with you when you check the place out!
What training and experience do the staff have?
Is it secure, does it feel like somewhere you’d want your child to spend time? Are there pets, is it non smoking?
What are the routines; how is difficult behaviour dealt with? Are staff warm, friendly, joining in and showing affection? What does it look and feel like?
Are there plenty of stimulating toys? Where can children sleep?
Is it safe; is there enough space? Are there secure outside facilities?
What is on the menu; fresh fruit and vegetable; access to water; will they cater for special requirements?
Are the toilets and basins clean, child-sized, are there facilities for potty training/baby changing?
Your expectations – such as your working hours, time-keeping, meal preparation, washing, baby sitting, costs and their policy on late pick-ups?
Ask to see their policies for confidentiality, child protection and health and safety.
