I want to learn and work at the same time - what kinds of things can I do?

Here are some ways you can earn while you learn. Remember think about the field of work that you want to train in.

Apprenticeships give you on-the-job training, the chance to study for a nationally recognised qualification, maybe an NVQ, and earn money while you learn. Check out more information at: http://www.apprenticeships.org.uk/

Apprenticeships can vary but they usually last between 12 to 24 months.

As an apprentice you must be paid at least £80 per week. You may be paid more than this depending on the sector you work in, your age and how long you have been an apprentice.

To find out what Apprenticeships are available in your area, call 08000 150 600.

National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) are work-related qualifications which reflect the skills and knowledge needed to do a job.

You can choose to take an NVQ when still in full-time education or if you want to start a job which offers training. An Apprenticeship will give you the opportunity to gain an NVQ Level 3 or higher or New Deal can offer you the chance to study or train for an NVQ for up to 1 year.

Foundation Degrees are vocational qualifications that offer you the flexibility to earn while you learn and increase your career opportunities.

If you complete a Foundation Degree you can go on to achieve other professional qualifications, or study for an honours degree.

Examples of professions that people study foundation degrees for include teaching assistants, hotel managers, aircraft engineers and legal executives.

You may want to contact companies direct to get some work experience or if you are under 19 years of age, speak to a Connexions Direct Adviser by calling 080 800 13219. You can find your nearest Connexions centre at: www.connexionshumber.co.uk

The Disabled Workers Co-operative supports disabled people to find work and progress in their chosen career. Find out more by visiting their site at www.disabledworkers.org.uk/.
