What different benefits do people get?
Check out this website to find out more about benefits: http://direct.gov.uk/en/YoungPeople/Money/FinancialHelpForYoungPeople/
If you don’t earn much or you’re bringing up children, care for someone, are ill or have a disability benefits can provide additional income for you.
If you're unemployed and available for work you may qualify for Jobseeker's Allowance and other benefits, depending on your circumstances. You might also be able to get help and support with your search for a job through the New Deal scheme.
If you're 16 or over Jobcentre Plus offers advice on the benefits you can claim and help filling out all of the relevant application forms. Call (01482) 584467 to find out more.

Direct payments
All benefits are paid by Direct Payment. This means your money is paid straight into a bank, building society or Post Office account of your choice.
However, some payments are treated differently. For example, Housing Benefit can be paid directly to your landlord.
If you live in a council house you may receive Housing Benefit as a reduction in rent, and Council Tax Benefit as a reduction in your Council Tax bill.
I’ve left school – what benefits am I entitled to?
You may be able to claim benefits if you:
- Are receiving Income Support/Job Seekers Allowance
- Are a student couple with dependant children
- Are a lone parent/foster parent of a child under 18
- Satisfy the conditions for Disability Premium/Severe Disability Premium or Disabled Students Allowance due to deafness
- Have been incapable of work for 28 days
- Are waiting to return to a course, having taken approved time out due to illness/caring responsibilities that have now ended
Who can’t claim?
Even if you are listed in one of the categories above, you will not be able to claim if you live in your parents’ home or are a student (whether full or part time, and including couples whether one or both are students) living in halls of residence or other accommodation where you pay the rent to the educational establishment you attend.
