...lights, microwaves, radios, iPods, TVs and satellite boxes, heaters, fridges, freezers, stereos, computers, cars, trains, kettles, DVD players, games consoles, mobile phones... How many ways do you use energy every day?
Why must we save energy?
We may want more and more things in our homes and to take more holidays, but there isn’t an endless supply of the energy needed to make all these things work.
The world is using too much energy. So we need to try and save as much energy as possible.
You may have heard about global warming or 'climate change'. This means the earth is warming up and glaciers are melting, oceans are getting higher and drought is happening in hot countries more often, all making people's lives, particularly in poor countries, worse.
Nearly all scientists believe that climate change is happening because of our huge use of energy sources like electricity, gas, oil and coal.
What can we do to try and make sure climate change doesn’t get worse? Come on, have you guessed yet??!! That’s right USE LESS ENERGY!!
So, how can I save energy?
There are lots of ways that we can do our bit to save energy. Most of them are really easy too.
- Switch off lights when you leave the room - it's obvious, but how often do you do it?
- Remember to turn off the TV (not just on standby) when you are NOT watching it
- Only turn the heating up at home when you are cold, put a jumper on first
- Try to walk, cycle or get the bus wherever you can - you'll be fitter too. Check out the Getting around Hull and Road safety pages to find out more
- Remember to turn off the tap while you brush your teeth
- Try to say no to plastic bags when you’re offered them in shops. Take a bag with you that you can reuse.
- Fill the kettle with less water - if you’re only making one cup don’t waste water and energy by boiling enough to make tea for every member of the Hull Tigers!
- To save even more water, try to have a shower not a bath - it uses much less water.
