Family problems

I’ve got problems at home - what can I do?

Remember, even people who love each other argue sometimes. Just because they fight doesn't mean they're going to stay cross with each other for long or if it’s your parents that they're going to get a divorce.

Nobody likes other people to think their family isn’t perfect but most aren’t! This is more common than you think. Talk to an adult you trust – a teacher or youth worker.

Where can I get help?

If you want to find out more call (01482) 581702. You can usually see someone on weekdays after 5pm and on Saturday mornings too.

How can I make sure we argue less at home?

Top tips for getting through family problems:

  • If something has made you angry, count to 10 and breathe slowly and deeply. When you're calm, try talking things through with the person you're arguing with. You'll probably feel much better and more in control than you did before
  • Your parents or carer was young once and they liked going out and having fun and snogging (yuck) like you do! It might seem like they don't understand you - but keep talking to them
  • Remember that parents and carers don't really want to make things difficult for you they just care about you. Sometimes it's hard for them to remember what it’s like being young!!

Talk to your parents or carers about how you feel - instead of screeeeeeeeeeeeeaming at them! You never know miracles might happen and they might listen to you more.
