Racism

What is racism?

When people think badly of a particular group because of their skin colour, where they’re from, their religion or culture this is prejudice.

People can be racist towards other people because of what they think they are like even if this is not true. When racism in society is directed towards a group of people they may be treated worse than others – this can make it hard for people to get a job, get into a good school. This is called discrimination.

Different ways that racism can show itself:

  • People who have racist views
  • Name calling and making jokes
  • Violence
  • Organised racism by political parties
  • Being blamed for causing problems that are not their fault
  • Name calling, gestures, taunts, insults or 'jokes'
  • Hurtful graffiti
  • Threatening someone
  • Making fun of the customs, music, accent or clothes worn by anyone from a different culture
  • Refusing to work with people because they are from a different culture.

What can I do about racism? Can I get help?

If you hear people coming out with racist stuff and you don’t like it you might get really angry. Try to stay calm and if you feel comfortable talk to them in a calm manner but remember racist people believe they are right and don’t always want to change their mind.
