Someone has died and I don’t know how to feel better

At some point in your life you may lose someone close to you through death.

The feelings you have to deal with may be new to you and feel very strange and painful but they are normal. Whether you feel angry, sad or nothing at all.


Who can I talk to?

It’s ok to feel how you feel and there are people who can help you. Be patient with yourself – it might take a while to feel better but talk to people you know and trust can help.

Talking openly about the loss with parents can sometimes be difficult if they are trying to cope with their own grief.

It can be helpful to speak to professionals and meet other children and young people who have a similar experience. This can allow you to begin to talk about and express your own confused feelings and show you that you are not alone. Find out about who you can talk to below.

The WYNGS Bereavement Service is there to help grieving children and their families during this difficult period.

We offer:

  • Creative groups for bereaved children and young people.
  • A parent/carer group which enables them to support the children through what may be difficult weeks and gives them the opportunity to express and share their own experiences.

What happens next:

After receiving a referral a member of the team will contact the child/young person and assess their suitability for the group.

If a child/young person is not suitable for the group initially they and their family will be offered support and advice by the team or other relevant organisations.

A parent’s death is never a punishment. You are not to blame. It’s hard to imagine now but you will want to have fun again.

When you’re feeling ready maybe try one of these ideas:

  • Take a special card to their grave - or to where their ashes were buried or scattered
  • Begin to make a memory box in which to keep things that remind you of them
  • Make or buy a new frame for your favourite photograph
  • Write them a letter or a poem or a song.
