Being a young carer

“My dad left us when I was little and since I can remember I’ve looked after my mum.  I go to a support group for Young Carers and that really helps. We go out together and the best thing is to switch off for a bit and just be a normal teenager not a carer. I even met a really cool lad at the project!”

Chloe, 14

I have to take care of my mum/ dad-how can I get some help?

Do you care for an adult with an illness or disability? You probably do an amazing job but sometimes you might get fed up, frustrated or just need a bit of a helping hand.

Get in touch with Hull Young Carers Project for support, information and advice. Call (01482) 803042 or email nesdc@actionforchildren.org.uk. They’ll help you meet people who understand what it’s like caring for someone and will help you do cool stuff while still looking after your parent.

Young carers who come to the project enjoy:

  • The chance to meet other carers
  • Trips where you can meet other carers
  • Practical help like cookery classes.

You can get advice and support and information about the illness or disability your family member has.

Sometimes I feel like I need a break but I feel guilty.

Looking after your family member 24/7 probably feels normal to you but you might still get down sometimes.  If you’re looking after them and then doing a full day at school no wonder you get tired– you’re not super human!

Remind yourself that the situation you’re in isn’t your fault and you’re not responsible for everything. YOU SHOULD NOT FEEL GUILTY.

Get in touch with Hull Young Carers Project for support, information and advice. Go on, give yourself a break and call (01482) 803042 or email mailto:nesdc@actionforchildren.org.uk.

Talking to people about how you feel can really help.

If your teacher is giving you a hard time for always handing work in late or for being sleepy in class you could try talking to them.

If your mates are giving you a hard time explain that if you don’t ask them round or don’t always go out with them it’s not because you don’t want to.
