Road safety

Don’t get slack about crossing the road, always remember to follow the Green Cross Code:

  • Find a safe place to cross then stop
  • Stand on the pavement near the kerb
  • Look all around for traffic and listen
  • If traffic is coming let it pass – look all around again
  • When there’s no traffic near – walk straight across the road
  • Keep looking and listening for traffic while you cross
  • Always walk straight across the road, never run.

Don’t send texts when you’re crossing the road you might miss that huge elephant coming straight at you!

Get cycling

There are loads of reasons why it’s good to get cycling.

For your health:

  • Cycling improves your strength and fitness
  • Cycling can also help weight loss by burning excess body fat
  • Cycling to school can help young people feel more confident and independent.

For the environment:

  • Cycling is good for the planet and your local area – cycling produces virtually no pollution and causes less traffic congestion so you’ll make a difference to the environment.

…and it’s great FUN!!

  • Plan the route you're going to take. Let someone know where you're going and how long it should take
  • Make sure your shoes are tied and the laces don't hang down.
  • Make sure you’re safe – wear a helmet
  • Being safe is all about being seen, so wear bright coloured clothes in the day and reflective strips and luminous colours at night
  • Take notice of traffic signs and signals
  • Don’t ride on footpaths
  • Make sure your bike is the right size for you
  • Check the air pressure of your tyres, and make sure they're not worn out. Your chain must be well oiled and not hanging off.
  • Check your brakes.
  • Always use lights at night and make sure your lights and reflectors are clean, and that the lights are working and the batteries are charged
  • If you’re cycling at night – think about where you’re going and plan your route.

I’m worried about my bike getting stolen – what can I do?

Always make sure your bike is safely locked up - 3.5 bikes a day are stolen in Hull so LOCK YOUR BIKE UP.

  • Speak to a community warden about cycle ID cards. These can help you get your bike back if it gets nicked
  • At night always lock your bike up in a well lit spot
  • Always lock your bike – even at home
  • Whenever you leave your bike make sure you put a lock through the frame and always take anything off the bike that could be stolen like lights or pumps.
