Special Educational Needs

What help is available for the different kinds of needs people have?

Lots of young people find school and education tough at times. If you have any problems talk to your teacher or another adult you trust.

If you need a bit of extra support with school and education you might have an assessment to find out the best way to help you. Remember you’re not alone and people want to help you!

Here are some of the different ways children in Hull can get help from the Special Educational Needs Support Service (SENSS).

Support teachers visit schools and work with children who may need extra support.

Some children with medical problems find it hard to go to their regular school and need to use the Home Tuition Service. This is where a pupils’ school gives them work to do and they have a home tutor to help them do it.

The Hospital Teaching Service helps to make sure children can carry on learning while they are in hospital.

The Language Unit gives special help to children aged 3-11 years who have speech and language difficulties.

Special schools are schools that help children learn in a way that suits them. There are six special schools in Hull for children with special educational needs.

The School Preparation Unit helps children (aged 3-5 years) with behavioural difficulties get ready for school.

The SENSS Children in Need Team has education co-ordinators who support looked after young people if they think they need help preparing for GCSEs or to improve their numeracy or literacy.

Hull City Council can provide home to school transport for children who have a Statement of Special Educational Needs and go to special education.

The West End Adolescent Teaching Unit is for young people who are patients at the West End Adolescent Unit. As well as teaching young people it offers support to parents and carers about education.
