Illness in family

My Mum, Dad, carer is really ill – how will it affect me?

If your Mum, Dad or carer is ill you might be worried about what might happen to them. It’s completely normal to be worried but try not to stress about it.

Your parents might not tell you what is going on because they won’t want to worry you. Let them know that it is important that things are explained to you.

Try learning about the illness. Check out these websites:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/health/index.shtml

http://www.mindbodysoul.gov.uk/health/

The person you care about might need to go into hospital for treatment. They might not be at home all the time. If you miss them try writing to them or put together a mix of their favourite songs.

My brother/ sister is ill or disabled and I don’t get as much attention

If your brother or sister is ill or has a disability you might sometimes feel that they seem to get more attention than you. This isn’t their fault and it isn’t your fault.

You might be used to helping out round the house or doing stuff for yourself. Your parents or carer will appreciate your help even if they don’t always let you know.

If you feel a bit left out or fed up at times talk to an adult you trust.

What help and support groups are there?

There are people you can talk to if you’re feeling a bit lonely or when things get rough.

Maybe show your parent or carer these groups who might be able to offer support or information:

Downs Syndrome Family Support Group

Provide support for young people with Downs Syndrome as well as information for parents and carers. Call (01482) 376483.
