Food Safety Week 7 - 11 June 2010

To mark the start of Food Safety Week, Hull City Council’s Environmental Health team are reminding young people in Hull about the importance of good food hygiene in the home. This is particularly important during the summer months, when levels of food poisoning soar.

If you would like some great ideas on keeping healthy while eating your food ... Fill out the quiz and return it to us at cms@hullcc.gov.uk ... we have some book tokens up for grabs!!

Noise Action Week

Every year Hull City Council responds to noise complaints. The main complaints were loud music, barking dogs, behavioural noise and DIY noise.

Emma Goodman, principal environmental health officer, said: "We've been working with children from year 6 in Hull's primary school to help them to understand about noise nuisance and how it effects their health. As part of this we ran a competition which asked the children to design a poster which will be part of Noise Action Week in Hull.

"Lydia of Alderman Cogan C.E Primary School won the competition. Lydia’s poster showed a typical scenario of a neighbour dispute due to loud music being played at night and keeping their neighbour awake, which we thought captured the spirit of the action week really well.

"It's important for people, no matter how old they are to be mindful about the amount of noise they create. Sometimes people aren't aware of the amount of noise they are making or how much of a disturbance it creates and how it effects the health of their community. Once we've explained the situation to them it is usually resolved easily. It's unfortunate that in a minority of cases that people don't cooperate which can result in the council taking legal action."

Excitement mounts for Blossom Celebration Event

The third round of the Hull Ready - Make £5 Blossom scheme took place at the Guildhall on April 28. Local primary schools and businesses met to talk about how they would work together to make a profit on a £150 loan and the money was handed over between each school and business partner.
The children have 3 months to work with their business partners and develop an idea to try to make a profit on their loan. They will then come together at a celebration event in July, at Hull Truck Theatre, to reveal how much money they have made!
The schools taking part include Griffin, Thanet, St Thomas Moore, North Ferriby, Broadacre, Thoresby, Gillshill, Eastfield, East Halton, Alderman Cogan, Thorpepark and Longhill primary schools.
They will be supported by Hull businesses including Neil Hudgell Solicitors, KWL, CorpCom, The One Point, The Tigers Trust, Pollyanna on-behalf of Princes Avenue Traders, Kingstown Furniture, Top Banna, Brigg Garden Centre, Hallmark Solicitors, Dove House and Sign Services.
Good luck everyone!

Success for cycling scheme

Hull's cycling scheme in East Park has won the first BBC Power of Sport award in East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire for opening up opportunities for disabled children and young people to get cycling.

Specially adapted cycles are provided for children and young people with disabilities who may never have had the chance to ride a bike before.

The project, run by Simon Berry from KIDS, on behalf of Hull City Council, was developed after pupils from Frederick Holmes Special School told of the need for a cycling scheme for disabled children and young people in the city.

Frederick Holmes students aiming high

Find out what students from Frederick Holmes Special School have been doing to help promote the need for better changing places in Hull.

“We are 4 students from Frederick Holmes Special School, Shane, April, Alice and Abigail, and we have been working with Hull City Council to help improve changing places in Hull City Centre.

We all attended a youth parliament meeting that was about health and mentioned that one of the most important health things for us was better changing rooms/toilets in the City Centre. We created a power point presentation to show what a changing room needs so that it can be accessible and inclusive.

We are involved as part of the Aiming High group and we have now created a questionnaire to help us get the correct location in the City Centre for a changing room.

The two places for this year have been highlighted as Princes Quay for a brand new, one fully equipped, or for St Stephens to be made bigger allowing it to become a fully equipped changing room.”

One of the students now sits on a group; making decisions alongside other members of the group, about where and how the Aiming High agenda funding is spent, to improve disability services.

If you want to send us your ideas about changing places, download and complete the questionnaire. Please return it to: Simon Berry, KIDS – IVS project, Chanterlands Avenue, Hull, HU5 4DJ

The group has also been involved in a project about ‘Inclusive Cycling’ in East Park. Find out more in the newsletter below.
