The Institute of Fundraising is encouraging the voluntary and community sector to register for gift aid.
There is currently more than £600 million unclaimed each year. Gift aid enables charities to reclaim the basic rate of income tax, and higher rate tax-paying donors can reclaim the difference between the basic and higher rate of tax.
How it works -
Gift aid is worth an extra 28p per £1 donated (after April, 2008, with the proposed reduction in income tax, the value of gift aid will be 25p for every £1 donated)
charities can reclaim gift aid on donations from the past six years if they have the donor’s permission, and a gift aid declaration
donors must have paid as much in income tax or capital gains tax as the charity is claiming back
