Paragon Interchange

A successful partnership between Hull City Council, Citybuild, Yorkshire Forward, Network Rail, First Transpennine trains, East Yorkshire Motor Services and Stagecoach has transformed the city’s Paragon Railway Station into a pioneering integrated transport interchange.

At a cost of £18m and with redevelopment work over three years, travellers to and around Hull now benefit from having trains, buses and coaches together under one roof.

A “wow” factor development

Visually, The Interchange is a very exciting building.  Its state-of-the-art facilities are truly 21st century, yet the innovative design preserves the graceful Victorian façade of the original Paragon Station building, and enhances it with the addition of an elegant glass canopy. In fact, the sympathetic restoration has been awarded a sought-after Green Apple Award for the Built Environment and Architectural Heritage. On the north side of the building is a wall of glass which allows light to flood into the main concourse and create a bright and airy atmosphere.  

An asset to the city

The new Paragon Interchange is at the heart of Hull’s regeneration programme. Located in the city centre, it provides direct access to historic Hull’s award winning visitor attractions as well as new vibrant additions, such as the St Stephen’s retail and leisure centre. This prestigious facility offers the ultimate in shopping experiences and leisure facilities to suit every taste, from chic eateries and the Albermarle Music Centre, to a multi-screen cinema, bingo and a 24-hour supermarket.  In 2008 the new home for the internationally renowned Hull Truck theatre company will be completed. Furthermore, it is just a short walk to shops in the Old Town and at Princes Quay too.

Building a sustainable city

Investment in the Paragon Interchange and related regeneration projects reflects the new-found confidence in the city of Hull.  Better accessibility through improved transport services and facilities is enabling new enterprises to be set up all over the city, visitor numbers increase annually and there is a strong self belief among the business community and residents alike. Hull is definitely back on its way up as one of the top 10 cities to live and work in the UK.

The Paragon Interchange opened on Sunday 16 September, 2007.

Hull Paragon Interchange fully opened on Sunday 16 September. For the first time train, bus and coach services are together under the same roof.  There’s better facilities for passengers too – improved information points and combined travel centre so you can buy your rail, bus and coach tickets in the same building, shops and refreshment bars, security staff and 24 hour CCTV.  A comfortable new waiting room is due to open later in October.

There are 30 bus and four coach bays. These are used by East Yorkshire Motor Services, Stagecoach and National Holidays. Northern Trains, Hull Trains and First Transpennine continue to use the railway station as usual, offering services across to Manchester, London, the East Coast and stations in between.

There are drop-off points for cars and taxis, a dedicated area for cyclists to leave their bikes and better access for pedestrians. Brand new toilet facilities and a new waiting room will be completed later in October 2007.
