We have a number of methods of controlling and managing traffic on the city’s roads.
Traffic signals
Traffic signals (at road junctions and for pedestrians) work 24hrs/day, 365 day/year and can help reduce road traffic accidents. They also control traffic queues, delays and congestion on the road network.
Faults do occur from time to time and can range from individual lamps not working to all the lamps not working, damage from road traffic crashes and vandalism. Inappropriate ‘green time’ faults (eg. green times too short) are more difficult to rectify and these will have to be investigated because this may be due to congestion and not an equipment failure. In this case, the Traffic Signals Section will carry out a check to discover what the problem is.
If you wish to report a faulty or broken traffic light please contact us. Please remember to tell us the precise location of the faulty signal site (eg. the name of the main road and the nearest side road or specific building), the date and time, and as much information as possible about the fault.
If you believe that new traffic signals could improve the traffic flow or safety at a junction please contact us.
Speed limits
The maximum speed which is allowed on the public highway and is enforceable by law. In an urban area with a system of street lighting the speed limit is automatically 30 mph; if the speed limit is higher, eg 40 mph then there will be repeater 40 mph signs at regular intervals. There are no repeater signs allowed in a street lit 30 mph speed limit.
20mph zones are usually introduced as part of a local safety scheme or outside schools in an attempt to reduce injury accidents. The zones are normally installed along with some form of traffic calming measures. If the average speed of vehicles is 24mph or less a 20mph it may be possible for some zones to be implemented without the need for such measures.
20 mph zones are indicted by zone entry signs.
To request a 20mph zone you should write in to us at the address below, where the necessary investigations will be carried out.
Traffic projects
Traffic projects are normally medium to large projects featuring some form of Traffic Engineering that helps to assist in traffic management. These can take a number of forms which include :-
- traffic calming and 20mph zones
- safer routes to schools schemes
- the installation of pedestrian facilities
- local safety schemes (with a view to reducing road casualties)
- the installation of bus lanes
- the upgrading of existing highway corridors and streets
- cycle schemes to improve facilities for cyclists
