Children’s libraries

Our libraries provide a wide range of services for children and young people.

Children’s reading collections are available at all libraries. These include story and information books for all ages, including picture books for babies and toddlers. We also have books and resources to help parents and carers.

Some libraries have music CDs, videos, DVDs, CD-ROMs and Playstation games, books in dual and community languages, printed music and stories on tape and CD.

We also offer free Internet, ICT and CD-ROM access.

Many of our libraries offer:

  • Storytime and toddler time sessions for under fives
  • Chatterbook sessions - reading groups for eight years and up
  • Baby bounce sessions - rhymes, stories and fun with babies aged six to 18 months

Events and activities take place during school holidays and all libraries take part in the national summer reading challenge each year.

Our libraries are family friendly and offer baby changing facilities. More information about library facilities

Library staff are available to help children find books and information, both for pleasure and to support school work.

Visits from school classes and playgroups are welcome.

Joining procedure for children and young people

Children can become members of the library from birth. Children wishing to join the library give verbal details of their name, home address, parent/carer’s name, telephone number if known and date of birth. Proof of identity and parental signature are not required. Library staff will issue a library ticket for immediate use. Parental permission is required for access to the internet.

Booked up

Booked up is the new national programme encouraging children to read for pleasure.

All children entering Year 7 will be able to choose a free book from a list of specially selected titles. Schools will receive the students' free books by December.

All libraries in Hull have a full set of titles available for loan, and each of the Chatterbooks reading groups will be running special activities. The booked up booklist can be found on the booked up website (link opens in a new window).
