Family history

Everybody has a family, but many of us know very little about the generations before our grandparents. Researching your family history is an interesting and rewarding pastime. It can tell you where you come from, anchor you in a particular community and teach you about the past.

Much family history research can be done online. Useful websites.

But only so much information is available. Sooner or later you will need to research from original documents and other sources, some of which may be on microfilm.

These sources are currently housed at several places in Hull. The following is an outline list. For more details of the location of specific records see our family history guide.

Two of the main places for family history in Hull are the local studies library and the city archives.
