Twinning

Kingston upon Hull is twinned with Freetown, Sierra Leone. The towns were twinned to:

  • promote friendship and understanding between the cities of Kingston upon Hull and Freetown
  • strengthen commercial, educational and cultural links between the two cities
  • stimulate and foster mutual exchanges at all levels between the peoples of the two cities

The towns were twinned was established in 1979 at the instigation of the former Sierra Leone High Commissioner, Dr S T Matturi. Dr Matturi was a graduate of the University of Hull, and arranged for a Civic Delegation from Freetown to visit Hull.

Dr June Holst-Roness, Mayor of Freetown, suggested the twinning of the two cities, and the official twinning took place when a Civic Delegation from Hull visited Freetown in October 1980.

The Freetown Society of Kingston upon Hull was established in September 1981 with the support of the council.

In 2005, the mayor of Freetown, Mayor Winstanley Bankole Johnson visited Hull to mark the 25th anniversary of the twinning.
