Hull has 14 secondary schools and 71 primary schools, as well as over 6000 places for three and four-year-olds in 130 settings. The city also has a high standard of adult and community education, and local people can search for a course online.

Hull City Council is the local education authority for Hull. We look after school admissions, helping parents to find and apply for the most appropriate school for their children. We also provide for special education needs to ensure that all children have access to education.

We work with schools and other organisations to tackle issues such as bullying and truancy, we aim to reduce the need for exclusion.

Improving education in Hull is one the council's main priorities. We monitor the quality of education in Hull, and we are continually making significant improvements in educational standards.

GCSE results 2009

Early indications for GCSE results in the city show that at least 37 per cent of pupils have achieved five A*-C GCSEs, including English and maths. This is an improvement of more than seven per cent from last year (29.6 per cent) and the best results Hull City Council has seen since the Government’s gold standard was introduced.

Whilst the council recognises that there is still a long way to go, this year’s improvements have shown that results are travelling in the right direction and this year's have given a platform from which to improve in coming years.

Significantly, the figure for overall A*-C passes in the city is much closer to the national average, at over 64 per cent, which is an increase of more than 13 per cent from last year.

The gold standard

In 2006 the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) introduced the gold standard for GCSEs - which shows how many pupils achieve five A*-C GCSEs, including English and maths. Since then this has been the benchmark they use.
