Council tax bands
Most properties or dwellings are subject to the council tax. There is only one bill per dwelling, whether it is a house, bungalow, flat, maisonette, mobile home or house boat and whether it is owned or rented.
How much council tax you pay depends on which council tax band your property is in.
There are eight property bands. The band you are based in is decided by its open market value on 1 April 1991. The Valuation Office Agency decides which band you are placed in.
Lists allowing public access to the valuation 'bandings' of more than 20 million domestic properties in England and Wales have been placed online.
To find the council tax band of any property in England and Wales see the council tax valuation website (link opens in a new window).
