Young witness service

Research tells us that children and young people are often very worried about having to give evidence in court whether they are victims or witnesses.

The Hull Safeguarding Children Board runs a Young Witness Service for all children and young people called to give evidence in courts in Hull, East Riding, North and North East Lincolnshire. This includes the Youth Court, Magistrates Court and Crown Court. These children and young people who often give evidence in cases where a serious crime has been committed are doing the public a great service and are helping us to make Hull a safer place to live.

As more and more young people are called to court, it's becoming more important that we support them when they do, and familiarise them with what is an unfamiliar situation. Research tells us this can reduce the stress on young people.

We work with young witnesses and their parents and carers before they go to court to –

  • make sure that they have the right support in place to help them to give evidence
  • explain what is going to happen and what sort of help they can get at court
  • arrange a visit to the court before the day of the trial
  • support them at court on the day of the trial
  • support them after the trial
