Petroleum storage licence

Who needs a licence

You must have a petroleum storage licence if you are a business that stores and sells petroleum products for use by private individuals, such as at a petrol filling station.

Cost of a licence

The cost of a licence ranges from £42 to £120 depending on the volume of petrol stored. There is a fee of £8 to transfer the licence.

How to apply for a licence

To apply for a petroleum storage licence, please download and complete the application form below. Please note that you will need to include plans of the site with your application.

Once you have applied, an officer will acknowledge your application and advise you on the next steps.

Inspections and assessment for a licence

Your application must meet strict health and safety requirements and a licence will not be granted unless these are complied with. An inspection of the site may also take place.

How to appeal if a licence is not granted

If you have not been granted a licence you can appeal to the City Trading Standards Officer at Hull City Council. Please contact the City Trading Standards Officer on 01482 300 300.

How long the licence lasts

A petroleum storage licence lasts for 12 months. You will be sent a renewal after 11 months.
